Achille Mbembe address - Recognition, Reparation and Reconciliation Conference

FACULTY OF THEOLOGY BUILDING, 171 DORP STREET STELLENBOSCH VISIT: https://recognitionreparationandrecon... The year 2018 has special resonance for the conference. This is the 20th Anniversary of the Report of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. With the themes of recognition, reparation and reconciliation, and exploring how art and culture might offer spaces for dialogue and finding language for dealing with history’s legacies of violence, the conference provides us with the opportunity to reflect on lessons learned from a process that continues to inform responses to violent pasts across the globe. The themes of the conference have been carefully chosen to connect with global debates about the repercussions across generations of violent conflict, genocide, slavery, and many other forms of oppression. Over the last 20 years or so, many of you have made tremendous contributions in research, teaching and practice that draws from these themes, and we are privileged to be hosting a gathering that brings together this diverse group of scholars and young researchers to engage in thoughts and exchange ideas on the work that has been done.
