The roof of Shashi Kumar's house is damaged in several places. Vessels have been placed all over the room to catch the water, yet it continues to drip. Grandmother Ramdulari is lying on a khatia (cot), while everyone else is on the floor. Suddenly, a strong stream of water from the roof falls onto the grandmother's cot. Ramdulari (90): Screaming // "Hey Rajkumari! Hey Bahu (daughter-in-law)! Are you dead? Can't you see the water dripping right onto my nose? Hey Bhanumati, can't you see—is this a house or a river? Pick me up and move my bed to a dry spot—hurry, or I’ll die in this cold!" Bhanumati (60): Muttering to herself // "Oh God! What new drama is this in the middle of the night? *Maa-ji*, can't you see? Water is dripping all over the house; where is there even a dry corner left to move you to? And the roof—is it a roof or a sieve? Wherever you put it, the water is bound to come through!" In a corner where there is less water, she spreads three or four thick layers of these clothes. She then spreads a clean, dry sheet over them and arranges it neatly. Rajkumari (35): (Affectionately) "Dadi-ji, get up... come over here. I’ve laid down a thick bed of clothes; you won't feel the dampness from the ground anymore. It’s nice and soft now—go ahead and sleep comfortably." Ramdulari (90): (Seriously) "Hmm... well, at least you showed some sense. The others only know how to grumble."
