Tensión en la UNP: líderes sindicales responden a Petro y mantienen protesta indefinida
Unionized workers and bodyguards from the National Protection Unit (UNP) have been gathered for over 24 hours outside the agency's headquarters in the Puente Aranda district of Bogotá. The demonstration, which included setting up encampments and a stage, seeks to demand answers regarding the process of filling 6,000 permanent positions and a guaranteed budget to ensure the continued employment of security personnel. The day of protest has been marked by tension following statements by President Gustavo Petro and the intervention of the National Police's Dialogue and Order Maintenance Unit (UNDMO) to clear access to the institution. The central point of the unions' demands lies in the regulatory changes applied to the profile of applicants for protection officer positions within the agency. According to the workers' organizations, the changes in academic requirements open the door to discretionary appointments. Regarding this, Wilson Devia, president of the UNP's largest union—which represents 3,000 bodyguards—and a permanent employee of the agency, explained the reasons for the mobilization in an interview with Mañanas Blu on Blu Radio. “The protest has two main points. The first point, indeed, is the 6,000 positions created by the government (...) in an expedited manner, on January 19 of this year, they issued a decree expanding the staff to include 6,000 positions for protection officers, bodyguards at grade 18 and grade 15 (...) they modified Decree 83 in order to change the requirements for the protection officer positions at grade 18 and grade 15. And what requirements? The educational requirements. That position required a technical degree and a professional title, and in an expedited manner, in almost 15 days, they modified the decree to remove that educational requirement and only require 36 to 60 months of experience,” he said.
