Traditional Archery Among Roman Ruins | Abandoned City of Carsulae

Last Sunday (June 28, 2026) we drove to Terni — about an hour from Rome — to the archaeological site of Carsulae for a 3D archery competition hosted by “ASD Arcieri Città di Terni”, which served as a qualification round for the Italian Championship. Some of you might recognise this location: it's where the World Archery 3D Championship took place a few years ago, with the finals held right in the amphitheatre area. The sun was relentless — between 35 and 38°C all day — but the setting was breathtaking. There is something unique about shooting arrows among Roman ruins. We hope this video brings you a little bit of that feeling, as if you were walking the course with us. The competition format (FIDASC Federation — "Caccia e Tiro” typology). A quick (and very simplified!) breakdown: Number of arrows: 42 in total (21 stations, two valid targets per station, one arrow per target) Distance: between 7 and 45 meters. Scoring: Wound 5, Vital 10, Kill 12, Super Kill 15. The twist? Several (8) stations feature an additional "protetto" — a target you are absolutely not supposed to hit. If an arrow lands there, you lose points on that arrow. If the "protetto" is positioned in a tricky way—slightly above or below the target you need to hit—it's very easy to hit it, and some shots are built around this. On a couple of stations - which are not in the video unfortunately - the targets aren't visible from the peg - you have to walk through the forest, look for them -, and avoid the protetti as you go (all with limited time 90 seconds). Sounds a bit complicated, but it's good fun. In the end, my father and I were happy with our results, and several other members from our club went home with medals too. Thanks for watching!
