Josef Mánes: the founder of Czech modern art
Josef Mánes (1820 –1871) left a rich legacy to the Czech Republic – he made the calendar dial for the Prague Astronomical Clock, has a bridge in the capital named after him, and he designed the first flag, costume and logo for Sokol. He also painted “the Czech Mona Liza”. But what is the identity of the woman with the mysterious smile in his painting Josefína? And what is the curse of the astronomical clock, and did Mánes himself succumb to it?
