As we begin our third day under the new MOU we have already seen Iran refuse to go to Switzerland on Friday to begin negotiating... Iran denying a Witkoff report that they will allow inspectors on the scene of the three sites where enriched uranium was bombed last June, as well as voices from the IRGC calling for the resuming of a blockage on the strait of Hormuz. These are merely some of the problems that have already surfaced Add to this, article after article from both Jewish and Israeli sources criticizing the deal call Trump such things as a “sellout” a “failure” “not a friend to Israel,” etc. With this background, we’ll now consider the headlines as of this moment... US, Iran envoys head to Switzerland as Lebanon remain key test for deal (Iran International) Lebanon accuses Israel of 'brutal attacks,' preventing reestablishment of stability (Jerusalem Post) The Strait of Hormuz is reopening under Iranian controls UN experts warned the memorandum leaves Iranians largely invisible, 480 arrested in Iran’s northwest Iran paper ....US memorandum is war-management tool, not a durable settlement ... major issues postponed until later These headlines provide further testimony to the huge problems associated with trying to negotiate with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Basically, they give little hope for any genuine headway to be made on these crucial issues. Simply put, the future does not look encouraging. Headline 1 US, Iran envoys head to Switzerland as Lebanon remain key test for deal (Iran International) Lebanon remains a central test for the memorandum, with Iran and Hezbollah saying talks cannot advance without a broader ceasefire and a halt to Israeli attacks. While it seems that negotiators from both sides are now going to Switzerland, there is no agreement as of yet as to when the talks will start. It appears that the issue of southern Lebanon will top the agenda. Just will come out of any discussions is anyone’s guess. Headline 2 Lebanon accuses Israel of 'brutal attacks,' preventing reestablishment of stability (Jerusalem Post) Over 50 projectiles were fired at Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. As usual, this caused Israel to respond to their continued breaking of the new so-called ceasefire. Headline 3 The Strait of Hormuz is reopening under Iranian controls Iran saying vessels still require seeking permits as shipping monitors lower their threat assessment for the waterway. Iran seems to think that they are still in control of what happens to ships that pass through the international waterway connected to their territory. Like no other nation, they want to control who comes and goes... this is certainly a red line for the US as well as the rest of the world. Headline 4 UN experts warned the memorandum leaves Iranians largely invisible, 480 arrested in Iran’s northwest This is one of the HUGE problematic areas. While the Iranian people were told that ‘help was on the way” what we find is that the Islamic Republic continues its crackdown on the people with no oversight from anyone outside of the country. Basically, the MOU has given them further motivation to do as they please seeing that it keeps the current regime in power. Headline 5 US memorandum is war-management tool, not a durable settlement – Iran paper Interesting take on the situation from this Iranian source. A major point that was made is that the key issues have been postponed for now as both sides are trying to prevent a resumption of clashes. The can keeps being kicked down the road. Sooner or later, these substantive issues must be dealt with. The problem that remains is that each side is as far apart from each other as the East is from the West. Realistically, there is no compromise that would satisfy either side. So, the real question is this... what will they do? Dancing around these problems cannot go on forever but unless one side totally capitulates there is no realistic hope of a settlement. We do know from Scripture what will ultimately happen, Iran will remain at loggerheads with the US and Israel... genuine peace and stability will be an illusion. Fortunately, the Living God will eventually intervene. Until this happens, problems will abound.
