Apalachian Ouverture, James Barnes (Papirniški Pihalni Orkester Vevče)

Appalachian Overture (Op. 51) was composed by James Barnes in 1983 at the request of conductor and composer Claude T. Smith, to mark the 25th anniversary of Wingert-Jones Music Company. Barnes took a piece he had originally written for a high school honour band in North Carolina and shaped it into the overture we know today. It was premiered in the spring of 1984 by the Alamance County Honor Band. The overture is written in A-B-A form. It is a very powerful and joyful work — the slower middle section offers the listener a brief moment of respite, before the energetic Da Capo and a dramatic final section where both main themes are heard contrapuntally on top of each other, bringing the piece to a brilliant conclusion. Although programmatic in nature and evoking the spirit of the Appalachian Mountains, all melodies are original creations by James Barnes — particularly the lyrical middle section, which is reminiscent of the folk melodies prevalent in the American Southeast, where the Appalachian Mountains are located.
