Alfa Romeo's Disastrous F1 Return
Alfa Romeo dominated early Formula One but when it returned after a 25 year absence it found things much tougher. Instead of being the hero project which saved the company by providing a halo to revive sales, it was a costly and unsuccessful exercise which was one of the reasons why Alfa Romeo is a such a small part of the modern motoring world. As an Alfa Romeo enthusiast who has owned more cars from the marque than I care to remember, and whose first new car purchase was an Alfa Romeo in part as a result of the effect of the F1 team on my perception of the brand, the failure of the team was painful, especially knowing how close it came to making a difference.
