The Narrow Gate Has a Word Every Bible Missed
The narrow gate is not narrow. The Greek uses two completely different words in Matthew 7:13 and 14, and every English Bible collapsed them into one. The second word means pressed, crushed, compressed. This walks Matthew 7:13 and 14 through the original Greek word by word. The gate is stenos, a size word for dimensional narrowness. The way is tethlimmene, the perfect passive participle of thlibo, a force word meaning to press hard upon, to press as grapes. The destination is zoe, not biological survival but the divine quality of life Jesus identifies himself with. The road to it is described with a verb that connects directly to a garden named the oil press. After this, the narrow gate passage stops sounding like a sorting mechanism and starts sounding like a description of how something precious gets extracted under pressure. THE INNER DECODE: Two completely different Greek words sit behind the single English word narrow. The gate is stenos (G4728), defined by every lexicon as dimensionally narrow, obstacles standing close. The way is tethlimmene, the perfect passive participle of thlibo (G2346), which Thayer's defines as to press as grapes, press hard upon. The perfect tense means the way has been compressed and remains in a state of compression. The same root gives the standard word for tribulation, thlipsis, which appears 45 times. Mark 3:9 uses thlibo for crowds physically pressing against Jesus. 2 Corinthians 4:8 uses it for Paul pressed on every side. The word for the destination of the broad way, apoleia (G684), is the same word the disciples use in Matthew 26:8 for the waste of expensive ointment. Not destruction in the punitive sense but the loss of what something might have become. The destination of the compressed way is zoe (G2222), the quality of life John 14:6 names when Jesus says I am the zoe. The verb in verse 14 for those who find the way is heurisko, the root of eureka, the same verb from the seek and find promise in Matthew 7:7. The many enter passively. The few search and discover. The place where Jesus himself walked this compressed road is Gethsemane, from the Hebrew gat shemanim, oil press. The compressed way maps to the inner mechanism by which what is false gets pressed out and what is precious finally flows. The oil press is not punishment. It is production. 📖 Key Scriptures: Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 7:7, Matthew 7:12, Matthew 26:8, Mark 3:9, 2 Corinthians 4:8, John 14:6, John 17:3, John 10:10 🔐 THE FULL GREEK STUDY GUIDE for this video is available to Watchman members.
