What is really being celebrated? Age, femininity, sexuality, social status? Based on historical and anthropological research, I analyze how the quinceañera functioned—and in many cases continues to function—as a ritual that shapes expectations about women's bodies, social roles, and futures, but also how it is being reinterpreted, debated, and transformed today.
