We take you along to one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most enchanting cities: Mostar! Renowned for its postcard-perfect scenery, Ottoman-era architecture, vibrant markets, and the turquoise Neretva River, Mostar quickly became a highlight of our Balkan travels. 🚶‍♂️ Strolling Through Mostar’s Old Town We start our visit by walking from our Airbnb into the heart of Mostar, heading down the lively Brace Fejica pedestrian street. The closer we get to the iconic Old Bridge, the more the street transforms into a bazaar: shops overflow with copper jewelry, beaded necklaces, Turkish lamps, and handwoven textiles. We can’t resist picking up a beautiful copper coffee set as a souvenir. 🕌 Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque & Minaret Our next stop is the stunning Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, a 17th-century gem on the east side of the river. For €6, we get to admire the vibrant interior and climb the narrow spiral stairs to the minaret—rewarded with breathtaking views over Mostar and the Neretva River. 🌉 Stari Most: The Old Bridge & Mostari Divers Of course, no trip to Mostar is complete without visiting Stari Most (Old Bridge), the city’s star attraction. Rebuilt using original Ottoman methods after its destruction in the 1990s war, the bridge is not just a symbol of the city—it’s also home to the legendary “mostari” divers, who plunge from its heights for onlookers. (We just missed a jump but the excitement is contagious!) 🍽️ Bosnian Food Adventure We cross to the west side for a food crawl featuring our favorite restaurants and dishes: Divan: Breakfast of Bosnian fritters (miške), smoked sausages, cheeses, and sour cream. Konoba Taurus: Massive platters of stuffed vine leaves, peppers, and cabbage, with Sam happily mopping up every last bite with bread. Ćevabdžinica Tima-Irma: Famous for its grilled ćevapi and hearty mixed meat platters. Generous portions and warm service! Šadrvan: Stuffed peppers baked in cream, Bosnian “cookies” (minced meat patties), dolma, and the unforgettable tufahija (apple stuffed with walnuts). ☕ Bosnian Coffee Ritual A highlight of our stay is experiencing Bosnian coffee—served strong and unfiltered, with a cube of Turkish delight or honey. We learn to dip sugar cubes into the hot coffee for the true local experience. Potent and delicious! 🌉 Exploring More of Old Town Wandering Mostar’s cobbled (and sometimes rounded-stone) streets, we stop by: Kriva Cuprija (Crooked Bridge): The smaller prototype of Stari Most. Hamam Museum: Bosnia’s only preserved Turkish bathhouse, now a museum of bathing customs and home to a great souvenir shop. Turkish House (Kajtaz): A charming museum showcasing Ottoman domestic life, complete with traditional carpets, pillows, and old photographs. 🌄 Side Trip to Blagaj With a few hours to spare, we recommend a half-day trip to Blagaj—home to a dervish monastery set dramatically at the base of a cliff beside an emerald river. 💬 Final Thoughts Mostar has captivated us with its dazzling scenery, hearty cuisine, and especially its warm, resilient people. It’s a place we’ll never forget and a must-visit on any Balkans itinerary.
