The Moon Illusion: Your Eyes Measure Angles, Not Sizes
The full Moon low over the rooftops looks enormous. Two hours later it looks ordinary. Nothing about the Moon changed — and the version that looks bigger is the one that is measurably smaller. Your eyes never measure size. They measure angles. The Moon covers about half a degree of your sky every single night, without exception — your fingernail at arm's length covers it completely. To turn that angle into a size, your visual system has to guess how far away the object is, and near the horizon that guess has nothing to stand on. This video works through the whole thing: why the atmosphere flattens the Moon but never enlarges it, why the low Moon glows copper, what Ptolemy and Ibn al-Haytham worked out about it centuries before anyone could photograph it, and three tests you can run yourself tonight with a sheet of paper and a phone. Roll a sheet of paper into a tube and look at the low Moon through it. The disc collapses to its true size. Take the tube away and it swells again. 2. Turn your back to the Moon and look at it upside down between your legs. The illusion weakens sharply. 3. Photograph the low Moon and the high Moon on the same night, same lens, same zoom. Measure both discs in pixels. They match.
