Saigo Takamori and Toyama Mitsuru: A Lecture by the Society for the Preservation of Genyosha Thought A transcript of a lecture by the Society for the Preservation of Genyosha Thought. Unraveling the lineage of the Japanese spirit, from Saigo Takamori and Toyama Mitsuru to Shohei Ohtani, Tenpu Nakamura, and Tansō Hirose. Urabe Noboru Profile Researcher of late Edo period and modern history, and book reviewer. Graduate of Fukuoka University. President of the General Incorporated Association "Let's Get to Know Our Town More." https://www.mottoji.net/ He places Fukuoka at the center of his research on modern history, unraveling the blind spots and mysteries of modern Japan through unexpected human connections. He is one of the few researchers in Japan specializing in the Genyosha. His major works include The Kurume Domain Disaster of Meiji 4 (Gen Shobo), Secret Stories of the Meiji Restoration: Fukuoka (Karan-sha), Who Was the Genyosha? (Gen Shobo, June 2024), and numerous other works such as "Modern Japan Seen from a Cemetery." His works can be found at the following website: https://www.urabe-noboru.com/ Genyosha Thought Preservation Society 4-2-52-502 Shigetome, Sawara-ku, Fukuoka City The Genyosha, from the Meiji era, advocated Asianism and supported the Indian independence movement to counter the colonialism of Western powers. Mitsuru Toyama and others sheltered exiled Indian revolutionaries, including Rash Behari Bose, providing them with funding and connections. They provided a safe environment for their activities based in Fukuoka and worked to shape public opinion within Japan. This gave the Indian independence movement Japan its backing, which led to the later development of the Indian National Army and the independence movement itself. The Genyosha's support is therefore of great significance. Was the Genyosha a Terrorist Group or a Hero of Asian Independence? The Genyosha supported independence from slavery in the Asian region, where the colonial rule of Western powers was deeply entrenched. After the war, the Genyosha was dissolved by GHQ, and its achievements are not widely known. Let's re-examine the activities of the Genyosha, a hero of Fukuoka, and consider whether its members supported the liberation of China, India, Korea, and other countries from colonial rule. Let's dispel the misconception of the GHQ's label of "right-wing" and consider whether this Fukuoka-based liberal rights group was actually active under the banner of Pan-Asianism. Genyosha The Genyosha was a political association founded in Fukuoka in 1879, advocating Japanese nationalism. Its first president was Kotaro Hiraoka, and key members included Mitsuru Toyama and Ryohei Uchida. Mitsuru Toyama Birth and Death Dates April 12, 1855 – October 5, 1944 (May 27, 1855 – October 5, 1944) Place of Birth Fukuoka Prefecture Occupation/Status Social Activist Other Names Ritsuun Nationalist activist. His father was a samurai of the Fukuoka domain. In the early Meiji era, he participated in the uprising plan of the Kyōshisha, an association of disgruntled samurai in Fukuoka, and was imprisoned. Later, he participated in the civil rights movement, and in 1879, he formed the Kōyōsha and campaigned for the establishment of a national parliament. In 1881, the Kōyōsha was renamed the Genyōsha, and gradually strengthened its assertions of nationalism and Asianism. While advocating a hardline foreign policy and participating in Japan's foreign expansionist policies, he also supported Asian independence and revolutionary politicians such as Sun Yat-sen and Kim Ok-gyun. As a leading figure of the right wing, he wielded considerable influence in the political world. Ryōhei Uchida 1874 - 1937 Japanese Nationalist and Asianist Head of the Kokuryūkai (Black Dragon Society), President of the Dai Nippon Seisantō (Great Japan Production Party) Kokuryūkai (Black Dragon Society) A nationalist organization established in January 1901 (Meiji 34). After World War I, the Kokuryūkai campaigned to submit proposals for the abolition of racial discrimination. Meanwhile, it actively participated in the Asian revival movement, including supporting the exile of Behari Bose and supporting the Indian and Philippine independence movements. In 2008, it was revived by Kenji Tanaka, a descendant of the founder Ryōhei Uchida and great-grandson of Kōtarō Hiraoka. This channel explores the story primarily through the work of author and book critic Noboru Urabe.
