Why are we often more afraid of people than of God? In the Gospel reading for the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus speaks about the fear of man, the fear of God, judgment, and the truth that will one day be revealed. Jesus encourages his disciples: “Do not be afraid of people.” But what does that mean specifically for Christians today? How can we courageously profess our faith without letting the opinions of others dictate our actions? And why is God’s judgment ultimately not only frightening but also healing?
