Financial authorities have begun preparing comprehensive institutional improvements and supplementary measures to prevent damage to individual investors caused by extreme volatility. Reporter Kim Dong-wook reports. [Reporter] Single-stock leverage ETFs were originally introduced with the aim of retaining investment funds flowing overseas back into the domestic stock market. As funds flock to so-called 'Samjeonnix' single-stock leverage products, they are showing signs of extreme overheating, shaking the entire stock market. In particular, with the total volume of these products exceeding 14 trillion won as of the end of last month, individual investors account for a staggering 92% of the holdings. Since this structure places the entire risk on retail investors, there are concerns that a sharp drop in stock prices could deal a devastating blow to middle- and working-class households. Voices criticizing the financial authorities' policy failures have emerged in the National Assembly, and some have even argued that the delisting of related products should be considered. The government stated that it takes these concerns very seriously and is currently discussing stabilization measures with relevant agencies. Measures being discussed include raising the minimum deposit, strengthening investor education, increasing fees, and restricting additional listings. On the other hand, some argue that the recent increase in stock market volatility is not solely due to single-stock leverage, and voices are calling for improvements to the system to help the market stabilize rather than focusing solely on regulation.
