SQUEAK THE MOUSE by Massimo Mattioli is a rather heavy Italian comic. Published in the wake of the 1977 Movement, it's a parody of Tom and Jerry and other cat-and-mouse stories. However, Mattioli uses the formula to weave deeper political commentary. SQUEAK THE MOUSE laid the groundwork for The Simpsons, creating Itchy & Scratchy. In this video, I discuss SQUEAK THE MOUSE and talk about the society of the spectacle, the trivialization of violence, and extreme sexualization. I explain the 1977 Movement in Italy and also comment on works like Krazy Kat, Tom and Jerry, and The Simpsons.
