First, unlike other rookie bands that reference overseas musicians, they share a conscious or unconscious overlap with albums released after the 2000s by bands such as Sister's Barbershop and MOT. However, through their sound production—particularly their guitar tones and phrases—they prove that they are by no means imitators or mere copycats; this meets with lyrics that possess literary charm yet resemble the childish innocence of a young boy, revealing itself as Thornapple's second distinct characteristic. Furthermore, the most intriguing third characteristic is discovered in the fact that these exaggerated texts and sounds actually possess a certain charm. Thus, Thornapple, who announced a powerful debut from the very beginning, disappeared from the scene due to a member's military enlistment. Then, just as the sense of regret grew due to their short period of activity, they suddenly released their second album. “The air at sunset, blooming profusely in crimson / The scent of people who have aged by a day I think I definitely like this world / where it is harder to hold my breath than anything else” - From the song ‘Haze’ Vocals with a nasal tone and straightforward delivery, guitar still seething with anxiety, and drums and bass maintained by a solid rhythm section. And the sudden appearance of sharp sounds, extraordinary melodies, and dramatic composition. Similarities to the previous work or expanded aspects are among the highlights of the second album, Abnormal Climate (2014). However, the unified musical tendency under the post-punk foundation compared to the first album, the freely unfolding psychedelic vibes, and the melancholic sentiment are the differentiating points of this album, or aspects that can be replaced by the word ‘growth.’ What stands out most is the storytelling conducted under the concept of ‘survival.’ Among the stories that sing of being alive (Song ‘Haze’), are ultimately captured by madness and melancholy (Song ‘Darkroom’), yet yearn for life despite everything (Song ‘Strange Tropics’), which thorn will you be pricked by? And how will you interpret their ambiguous expressions? I recommend Thornapple’s upcoming concert to you, who are still suffering from ‘Strange Tropical Nights’ and living in a ‘Deep Blue Spring.’ I conclude with an interview with Yoon Sung-hyun, who wrote and composed the album. “I want to remain a book that is still difficult to read.
