The Black Irish people of Jamaica
Tonight we’re diving into one of the most overlooked chapters of Caribbean and Irish history, the story of the Black Irish of Montserrat and Jamaica. After the wars and upheavals of the 1600s, many Irish people were transported throughout the Caribbean under British colonial rule, especially during the time of Oliver Cromwell. Over generations, Irish, African, and Caribbean histories became deeply connected, creating unique communities, traditions, surnames, culture, and identity that still exist today. In this discussion, we’re going to explore the historical records, colonial history, migration, slavery, indentured servitude, and the forgotten legacy of the Irish presence in Jamaica and Montserrat. We’ll also examine how these worlds merged culturally and spiritually over centuries in the Caribbean.
