Mahabhoj - Mannu Bhandari || Mahabhoj by Mannu Bhandari || The novel "Mahabhoj" is woven around a village called Saroha. Saroha is located in the western part of Uttar Pradesh, where elections for a Legislative Assembly seat are about to be held. The story begins with the death of Bisesar, alias Bisu. Dozens of people were brutally murdered in an arson attack on the Harijan settlement of Saroha village. Bisu had evidence of this massacre, which he wanted to take to Delhi to submit to the competent authorities and secure justice for the people of the settlement. However, due to political intrigue and Zorawar's plot (carried out in retaliation for the discovery of solid evidence against Zorawar), two men poison Bisu's tea, resulting in his death. After Bisu's death, his companion, Bindeshwari, alias Binda, keeps the resistance alive. Binda, too, is caught in the cycle of politics and crime and put behind bars. Ultimately, a member of the bureaucracy is killed. The character, Superintendent of Police Saxena, continues the resistance of the underprivileged. The central concern of the novel is how caste equations have become an essential part of Indian local politics. The oppression of people from backward and marginalized castes and the resistance to them by representative characters drive the narrative. Bhandari offers a satirical commentary on the opportunistic nature of the ruling class, the opposition, the media, and the bureaucracy, grappling with morality, inner conflict, and contradiction.[2] In this story, a poor man attempts to hold a feast after his father's death, despite his financial situation being extremely dire. Due to societal pressure, the expectations of pundits, and fear of public shame, he takes out a loan to organize the feast. However, in the end, the people attending the feast criticize his food and mock his situation. *Key Message:* Through this story, Munshi Premchand shows how the poor are oppressed in society under the guise of ostentatious culture and traditions. This story forces us to consider whether the soul of the deceased can be appeased by ostentation or by true devotion. From?
