Why am I creating this project?

My dream was to become a caricature artist. When I became one, I met many artists, and one of them showed me what he was doing at CalArts. He claimed he was animating whatever he wanted directly from his sketchbook. I thought he was lying so he brought me into CalArts and proved it. To my amazement, you really could draw anything you wanted in your sketchbook. The statement, “your imagination is your only limitation in animation,” was real. Up until that moment, I believed students had to simplify their drawings or “dumb them down” in order to animate them. But here he was showing me that as long as you had the energy and passion, you could do whatever you wanted, and the school would support you. I was sold. I decided I was going to learn animation so I could animate anything I drew in my sketchbook. Years later, I found myself in the video game industry, and I wanted to take that passion a step further. Not only would I animate anything from my sketchbook I would make it playable, so everyone could engage with my characters inside a video game. I’m not saying I’m going to make a “fun” game. I’m saying I want to make it possible for people to experience my passion for drawing, animating, and interacting with characters through a controller. I want the controller to act like an umbilical cord a direct connection so you can feel my passion and enjoyment for drawing and animation. I’m currently working on the sketchbook as well, and I’ll be publishing it so you can all take a sneak peek at what’s coming as this project evolves. Stay tuned for more posts.
