Ayet al-Kursi (The Quranic Verse) Ayet al-Kursi is the 255th verse of Surah al-Baqarah, the second chapter of the Quran in the order of the Mushaf. It is customary to recite this verse on various occasions, depending on various requests and wishes, and its widespread popularity and recitation is certainly no coincidence. REASON FOR THE RELEASE OF Ayet al-Kursi Polytheists abandoned their belief in monotheism and worshipped idols, believing they would intercede for them. While claiming to believe in God Almighty, they denied His divinity. Although many verses proving the belief in monotheism were revealed during the Meccan period, Ayat al-Kursi was revealed in the early years of the Medinan period to express the correct belief in God Almighty as a declaration and to summarize the common meaning of the monotheistic verses revealed in Mecca. (al-Murshidī, vr:27/A) According to another narration, this sublime verse was revealed following a story told by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This narration is found in our sources as follows: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informing Moses (peace and blessings be upon him) from his pulpit. The Children of Israel asked Moses, ‘O Moses! Is your Lord sleeping?’ Moses said to them, ‘Beware of Allah (may Allah be pleased with him),’ and tried to prevent them from asking such questions. Thereupon, Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent an angel to Moses (peace and blessings be upon him). He kept him awake for three days and three nights. Then He gave him two bottles, one in each hand, and commanded him to guard them. At times, Moses would sleep, and when his hands were about to strike each other, he would wake up and push them away from each other. Finally, he fell asleep in a position where the bottles touched each other, breaking them. Allah (the Almighty) revealed to Moses (peace be upon him): ‘If I had slept, the heavens and the earth would have fallen and perished, just as two glasses falling from your hands would have perished.’ The Ayat al-Kursi was revealed following the telling of this story. (Âlûsî, 2/8-9; Ali Arslan, 2/227-239) ON THE NAMING OF THE VERSE Our sources mention that the Ayat al-Kursi has approximately forty names; however, based on the word "Kursi" in it, it has become more commonly referred to as such, and this name has become common among the public. It is stated that the verse has approximately 90 names. Each of these names stems from different elements found within the verse. "Ayat al-Kursi, Suretu'l-Kursi, A'zam al-Ayât, Ayat al-Tawhid, Names such as Ayat al-Sıfatillah and Na'tillah, al-Ayat al-Hafiza, al-Ayat al-Walaya..." are some of the names of this sublime verse.
