2012 Toyota Prius (Gen 3) rear seatbelt retractor replacement

Is the rear seat belt in your 2012 Toyota Prius completely jammed, stuck, or refusing to pull out? In this video, I show you step-by-step how to remove the broken rear seat belt retractor assembly and replace it . Please note the 3rd Generation Toyota Prius (2010–2015) uses a plain mechanical retractor in the back seat rather than an explosive pretensioner. I mistakenly called it a "tensioner" a few times in the video. (A retractor is a basic mechanical lock that stops a seat belt from pulling out when you brake hard, while a pretensioner uses a built-in explosive gas charge to pull the seat belt tight during a crash). If you see any electrical connection to the seat belt then you likely have a pretensioner. 2015 and older models only have retractors in the rear seats. Gen 4 and newer models have pretensioners in the rear seats.
