A Morning Ride, A Historic Fort, An Unforgettable Trek | MAAKLIDURGA | Treks around Bangalore |

The Complete Guide to Makalidurga Trek Approximately 60 km from Bangalore, near the town of Doddaballapur in Karnataka, Makalidurga is the site of a historic hill fort perched on a rocky granite outcrop. Its name, Makalidurga, has two possible origins. One traces it to a woody climber known locally as Makali Beru or Makali Root, the juice of which is used to prepare a traditional health drink and is believed to purify the blood. The second links the name to a ruler called Makaliraya, a Palegar who used the fort as his granary during the late 1800s. The fort itself has a layered history. Rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire first held the fort; after their decline, the Nayakas took control. In the 1600s, Shahaji Bhosle, the father of Chhatrapati Shivaji, controlled the fort while ruling the Doddaballapur region. Legend also holds that the sage Markandeya Rishi performed penance here, lending the site a mythological significance that draws pilgrims to this day. The trail takes you past views of Gundamagere Lake, whose outline resembles the continent of South America, through rocky and forested terrain, and up to a ruined fort complex at the summit. At the top, the temple of Makali Malleshwara, housing idols of Lord Shiva and Nandi, is still actively worshipped by devotees from nearby villages. The combination of legend, history, and natural scenery makes Makalidurga a trek worth far more than its modest distance suggests. Trek Snapshots: Duration: 1 day Distance from Bangalore: 60 km Total Trek Distance: 1.4 km (one way) Base: Muthurayaswamy Temple Parking Lot, near Doddaballapur Altitude Gain: ~990 feet from the Railway Station Difficulty: Easy Permits: Aranya Vihaara Website (under Bengaluru Rural Treks) Can Beginners Attempt the Makalidurga Trek? Yes. Makalidurga is well within reach for a first-time trekker, provided you are in reasonable physical health and are not entirely new to walking on uneven ground. The trail is classified as easy and does not involve any technical sections. That said, beginners should be aware that the trail does include a short but genuinely steep rocky section approaching Rest Point I. The granite slabs and loose gravel here demand careful footing, and the risk of slipping, though manageable for an attentive trekker, is real. If you lead a mostly sedentary lifestyle, we recommend spending two to three weeks building up your walking and cardiovascular fitness before your first attempt. #adventureawaits #mountains #travel #trekking #aroundbangalore #treksnearbangalore #bangaloreattractions #forts #kannadavlogs
