Scalemates - scaleffect Quaker State Porsche March: Porsche’s Bold Foray into IndyCar (1988-1989) Here’s a scale tribute to one of Porsche’s most ambitious — and challenging — projects: the Quaker State Porsche March IndyCar of the late ’80s. This car represented Porsche’s entry into American open-wheel racing, blending their endurance racing expertise with the brutal demands of IndyCar’s ovals and superspeedways. The effort debuted in 1988, fielded by Porsche North America with backing from Quaker State. The chassis, built by March Engineering, was paired with an all-new Porsche 2.6L V8 turbo engine. While competitive on paper, the car struggled with weight distribution and power delivery, especially on the ultra-fast oval tracks that defined much of the IndyCar calendar. By 1989, revisions to the chassis and aerodynamics showed glimpses of promise. The team found moderate success on street and road courses, where Porsche’s engineering background shone through — but on the high-speed ovals like Indianapolis and Michigan, they continued to face challenges with pace and tire wear compared to established teams like Penske and Newman/Haas. The program managed consistent finishes but no wins, with its best results coming from improved reliability rather than outright speed. Though it never achieved the glory of Porsche’s sports car legends, the Quaker State Porsche March remains a fascinating chapter in motorsport history — a bold experiment in taking Stuttgart’s engineering to the heart of American open-wheel racing.
