Masking

"Everybody does it, but when autistic people do it, we find it so exhausting." Made by the Autism Activists, a fantastic group of young people aged eight to 17-years-old, and brought to life by animator Graeme Patterson. Masking is an often unconscious response where autistic people suppress natural behaviours, sensory needs, and self-identity in order to fit in with non-autistic peers. The activists share their experiences, how masking makes them feel, and the places and times that make them feel safe to be themselves.
