Their performance in World Cup was outstanding and real queen in volleyball world. Even Brazil was the 1st runner-up their standard can't compare to Cuba queen at all. Summer Olympic held July to August. World Grand Prix held after Olympics. The only warm-up match before this tournament is Moutreux Volley Masters held in May/June. Cuba upset Brazil 3:2 by that time. All teams perforamce was quite a mystery in this Olympics as no broadcast of any warm up games. Cuba was 3rd time consecutive champion by that time but the players performance was unexpectedly poor during preliminary round. Head coach Eugenio George stated he didn't expect the team was in such a bad shape by that time. Brazil failed to champion in World Championship & World Cup. Lost to Cuba 0:3. Both matches were overwhelming loss to Cuba. But after years of traning, the team became more mature and very all-rounded. In this match, a key player #9 Hilma Caldera (24yo, 1.83m) was injured. She played until the end but make Brazil lost advantage in upcoming matches especially facing Cuba again in semi-final.
