Here's How Europe Should Organise & Equip Its Air Force

Europe is rearming fast, but can Europe actually defend its own skies without relying too heavily on the United States? In this episode we break down Europe’s current air-defence networks, fighter aircraft fleets, and the growing debate around strategic autonomy, ITAR restrictions, and dependence on foreign-controlled military systems. We look at the real state of European air defence, from MANPADS and SHORAD systems like IRIS-T, NASAMS, Crotale, Pilica+ and RBS-70, all the way up to Patriot, SAMP/T, David’s Sling and long-range missile defence. We also examine Europe’s current fighter force structure, including the F-35, Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale and Gripen. Who operates what? How many aircraft are actually in service today? Which aircraft are easiest to maintain and disperse in wartime? And what happens if Europe becomes too dependent on American-controlled software, logistics and missile ecosystems? Finally, we discuss how a future European and Canadian air force could realistically be organised in a world increasingly shaped by drone warfare, missile saturation, and contested airspace. From Nordic-style dispersed basing to sixth-generation fighter programmes like FCAS and GCAP, this video explores what Europe may need to do to build a more sovereign and sustainable air-power structure for the future. If you enjoyed last week’s episode on organising Europe’s ground forces, this is the continuation into the air domain. #europe #airforce #nato 0:00 Europe’s Air Defence Dependency Problem 1:31 Why Air Defence Now Matters More Than Ever 1:48 Short-Range Air Defence & Drone Warfare 2:24 Europe’s Gun-Based SHORAD Layer 3:12 MANPADS: Europe’s Most Scalable Air Defence 3:54 Missile SHORAD: IRIS-T, Crotale & ASRAD-R 4:56 Medium-Range Air Defence: NASAMS, IRIS-T & CAMM 5:27 NASAMS, Kongsberg & US Missile Dependency 6:19 Long-Range Air Defence: Patriot vs SAMP/T 6:50 How Europe Should Build Its Air Defence 7:50 Europe’s Fighter Jet Problem 8:18 The F-35 Ecosystem & Strategic Dependency 9:59 Europe’s Indigenous Fighters: Typhoon, Rafale & Gripen 10:37 Europe’s Legacy Fighter Fleets 11:12 How To Organise Europe’s Fighter Forces 12:14 Fighter Costs, Engines & Performance Tradeoffs 12:51 Operations, Maintenance & Mission Readiness 13:45 Gripen, Rafale & Eurofighter in Wartime Basing 14:40 How Europe Should Base Its Fighters 15:55 Northern, Central & Southern Air Force Roles 16:28 Gripen’s US Engine Problem 17:00 Europe’s Sixth-Generation Fighter Future 18:07 What Comes Next: Logistics, Surveillance & Navy
