In this UPSC Sociology Optional lecture, we discuss the 2024 Sociology Paper-I previous-year question: “Discuss the dimensions of power in the construction and maintenance of social hierarchies in a society.” (2024/1/7c/10 Marks) Power is not exercised only through wealth, political authority, or direct coercion. It also operates through education, culture, social networks, prestige, ideology, institutions, knowledge, language, and everyday practices. These different dimensions of power help create and reproduce hierarchies based on caste, class, gender, status, race, and occupation. This lecture explains the multidimensional nature of power using the perspectives of Pierre Bourdieu, Max Weber, Steven Lukes, and Michel Foucault. Pierre Bourdieu explains how hierarchy is maintained through different forms of capital. Economic capital creates inequality through ownership of wealth, land, and property. Cultural capital, including education, language, qualifications, manners, and taste, gives dominant groups an advantage in schools, employment, and social mobility. Social capital provides opportunities through networks, contacts, and relationships. Symbolic capital generates authority through honour, prestige, and social recognition. The lecture also explains Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence. Dominant groups reproduce inequality by making their culture, values, and lifestyles appear natural, superior, and legitimate. As a result, subordinate groups may accept hierarchy without visible coercion. Max Weber defines power as the ability to realize one’s will despite resistance. His theory of legitimate domination explains how authority becomes socially accepted through traditional, charismatic, and rational-legal forms. These forms of authority help social hierarchies acquire legitimacy and continuity. Steven Lukes provides a deeper understanding through his three dimensions of power. The first dimension involves visible decision-making. The second dimension is agenda-setting or non-decision-making, where powerful groups prevent certain issues from entering public debate. The third dimension is ideological power, through which people internalize dominant beliefs and accept inequality as natural. Michel Foucault explains power as dispersed throughout society rather than concentrated only in the state. Power operates through knowledge, discourse, classification, surveillance, and disciplinary institutions such as schools, hospitals, prisons, media, and bureaucracies. These institutions shape behaviour, identity, and ideas of what is normal or deviant. This lecture also applies these theories to Indian society. Caste hierarchy is maintained through ritual status, social exclusion, cultural legitimacy, institutional discrimination, and dominant-caste power. Class inequality is reproduced through unequal access to education, healthcare, property, and employment. Patriarchy operates through family, religion, media, workplaces, and political institutions. Contemporary digital platforms introduce new dimensions of power. Algorithms, artificial intelligence, surveillance systems, and technology companies increasingly influence information, public opinion, employment opportunities, consumer behaviour, and political participation. The lecture concludes that no single theory can fully explain social hierarchy. Bourdieu explains unequal capital and symbolic reproduction, Weber explains legitimacy, Lukes reveals visible and invisible power, and Foucault explains disciplinary power and knowledge. Together, they provide a comprehensive sociological understanding of how hierarchy is created and maintained.
