The song talks about the daily struggles of a secondary student, with themes like hating math and stuff, as there was no music score, the theme of "Battle Hymn of the republic", an American military song was used as the song. This song was controversial at the time and in a society like imperial Japan, it's not hard to see why. Mizushima was reprimanded by the school authorities for referring to the book bag as a beggar bag with these lyrics, and was banned from going out. However, the instructor of Kokuhanbun said that he was pleased that he would be satisfied if he write lyrics that are good. In addition, Akikatsu Kato, the lyricist of "Infantry Song," was also a fellow student in the 10th period of Meiko. Mizushima Shuhei wrote this song in 1913 when he was 15 years old while he was a student at a youth army officers school and presented it during a school festival. The principle got angry for calling the school bags “beggars bags” and he got punished by being put into a curfew for couple weeks. His Japanese language teacher was actually impressed by his lyrics and happily praised him for it. The song became popular among other army officer schools around the country and students would sing it until the end of ww2 in 1945. Mizushima himself passed away in 1947.
