She also shares her gardening joy with others. Every Friday, gardening enthusiasts from the city help her with the work in her vegetable garden. On the centuries-old Höfenhof farm near Schiltach, Walburga Schillinger and her husband Karlheinz practice traditional farming: with a large vegetable and herb garden, a beehive, a small herd of cows, grain cultivation, and timber from their own forest. Diversifying income streams has always been essential on old Black Forest farms; Walburga and Karlheinz Schillinger continue this tradition. They farm organically – at an altitude of 560 meters. For Felix Drathschmidt, wood also holds special significance. For years, he has been restoring his own listed Black Forest farmhouse in the High Black Forest. In addition, the carpenter restores antique rural furniture in his workshop in Lenzkirch-Kappel. Further west, in the mild foothills of the Black Forest, Hansjörg Haas is taking advantage of the favorable climate to realize his dream of a rural garden surrounding a historic mill building. In his Victorian-style greenhouse he grows vegetables and summer flowers, boxwood-edged beds give structure to the garden and the garden enthusiast even makes a playful reference to Roman times – with some amphorae submerged in the water basin.
