The Strange Oscar Tradition We Don't Get Anymore

Let's dive into the fascinating world of the Lone Directors: the filmmakers who were nominated for the Academy Award of Best Achievement in Directing without their films making it into the Best Picture category. //Join me on Patreon:   / moviewise   //Follow me on Twitter: https://x.com/MrMoviewise It happened to so many great directors it's become a badge of honor (for me, at least). Scorsese had it happen to him, Billy Wilder had it three times, like Alfred Hitchcock. Spielberg lost his shot with "Jaws" because of Lone Director Extraordinaire Federico Fellini, but he got it back two years later by joining the list. And CLARENCE BROWN! A bit of random trivia I couldn't fit into the video: a few films from the list feature other Lone Directors in their cast. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" features François Truffaut, "The Cardinal" features John Huston, "The Player" features Sydney Pollack and Tim Robbins, who's also in "Short Cuts". Since we've got this far, here's the the partial list of Lone Directors throughout Oscar history. I excluded the first three years because most nominees were Lone Directors, so it was no fun. That period's a mess.
