I was feeding fish at my sister’s pond when this catfish surfaced—and look at that mouth on that thing! I knew I wanted to draw him. In this drawing lesson, I’ll show you how I look for simple shapes before adding contour lines, value, texture, reflected light, and those unmistakable catfish whiskers. You’ll see me find ovals, a kidney bean shape, even a lightning bolt as I work through what I’m seeing. The goal isn’t photographic realism.
