Dr. Stephen Sofie: "Freeze Casting Ceramics"
Please note: The Honors Presents Lecture Series welcomes diverse opinions, beliefs, perspectives, and experiences. Honors Presents encourages all students and viewers to think critically and process the information presented in the Lecture Series in an open-minded and holistic manner. The content of this presentation is a reflection of an individual's/group of individuals' unique background and expertise. Live event took place on October 23, 2020. Prof. Sofie received his Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Washington in 2002 and prior to coming to MSU in 2005 worked at NASA’s Glenn Research Center to develop novel high temperature electrocatalysts, study interfacial phenomena in metal/ceramic interfaces, and design robust, high temperature fuel cells. Prof. Sofie’s area of expertise resides in innovative slurry-based processing, materials synthesis and characterization, sintering, and device fabrication/testing with recent activity in solid oxide fuel cells, toughening of porous nickel-zirconia cermets, thermodynamic stabilization of nano-scale metal catalysts, and solid-state lithium batteries. Prof. Sofie has developed several new ceramic processing approaches for the microstructural engineering of porous materials and pioneered methods of freeze-based processing of ceramics with more recent extension to metals and polymers. Prof. Sofie serves as the campus director for the Montana University System MatSci PhD program and leads undergraduate materials engineering curriculum in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering department. In his presentation, Dr. Sofie describes his journey in materials engineering research, from his undergraduate work at the University of Washington to his experience at NASA's Glenn facility to his present work at Montana State University.
