Its name comes from its geographic location, as it is surrounded by mountains. Previously, it belonged to the municipality of Bánica and was called Sabana del Bohío. In 1888, it was elevated to municipality status by President Fernando Arturo de Meriño. The municipality's economic activities are based on large-scale agriculture and commerce. The main crops are beans, pigeon peas, onions, avocados, sour and sweet oranges, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, squash, and coffee; other minor fruits and vegetables are also produced there. Education: The first teacher in El Cercado was Ana Montero Montás, whose school was located on what is now Oscar Emilio D’Oleo Street. Ms. Montero was educated by Professor Manuel Blamón, a Spanish national, who was brought to the community as a private tutor by some of the local families.
