That’s because the drums are essentially a group of percussion instruments tied together in a set. Trying to get them all sounding good together without creating any phase issues or bleeding is an art of its own. In this video—which comes from Berklee Online’s Microphone Techniques for Live Sound Production course by Ken “Pooch” Van Druten and Ben Cochran—Pooch says that you have to start by miking the snare drum. You’ll need two Shure SM57 mics, a model which has been the most widely used dynamic microphone on the snare. It has a wider cardioid polar pattern than most microphones we use in live sound, yet good side and rear rejection. This allows us to capture a wide area even when the microphone is placed very near to the source.
