56 Shoscombe Old Place from The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1927) Audiobook
Finally The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place has crossed the line from copyright into the public domain. (Another one to come very soon). It was first published in Liberty Magazine in 1927. It is an interesting tale which perhaps rehashes some earlier themes. There are aspects of the plot and dialogue which might perhaps jar with the modern listener, as there were in The Adventure of Three Gables. It is interesting to reflect on the currents of world history flowing in 1927 (including the rise of fascism) and Conan Doyle's atypical (?) references to race related issues. I was particularly struck by Sherlock Holmes' observations regarding the use of microscopes. Yes, the examples given might narrow the field but they're not exactly copper-bottomed. Conan-Doyle was giving a thumbs up to advances in forensic science here and showing he was keeping abreast with modern investigation techniques. A rather gentle story which unfolds at an ambling pace, but with some entertaining moments. I do hope you enjoy it! It is, of course, read by me, Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio and was recorded on the 5th January 2023.
