1990 Nissan R90CP sound in action: Low-Drag JSPC Group C Monster at Circuit Paul Ricard!
In 1989 Nissan competed with the R89Cs, developed in conjunction with Lola Cars (internally called T89/10), in both the World Sportscar Championship and the All Japan Sports Prototype Championships. For the 1990 season they decided to actually develop two different cars. The chassis of the R90C was still built by Lola (T90/10) but then the car for the WSC would have been designed by Nissan Motorsports Europe, starting from the R89C and improving it, while the JSPC's R90 would have been built by Nismo, directly in Japan. The car were named respectively R90CK and R90CP, with this second one having a low downforce design compared to the CK. The T90/10 chassis was stiffened with internal dimensions slightly reduced and wheel movement was increased whilst the gearbox now featured a one piece casing which allowed for wider venturi and it featured a semi-dry sump modification. AP Racing carbon disc brakes replaced last year's Brembo unit. A proper low downforce body and rear wing were designed for the R90CP ("P" referring to the Oppama Nissan plant where Nismo is based). The front of the car featured a higher nose, with the narrow channels eliminated and replaced with large ducts on the inside of the fender. The fenders themselves were also redesigned, with headlights placed vertically instead of the horizontal design on the R89C and R90CK. The cockpit of the R90CP was identical to its R90CK sibling, yet the sides of the bodywork were changed. Most notably, the rear-view mirrors were integrated into the bodywork on the fender, instead of small exposed mirrors on the side of the windshield. The turbo inlet was placed on the front edge of the rear fender, instead of on top of the engine cover on the R90CK. The rear wing was placed much lower on the car, with the rear wheel fender bodywork extending to connect with the rear wing endplates, similar to a style used on the Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo in North America. Its aero was mainly developed for high-speed stability on shorter, twistier layouts prevalent in JSPC circuits, like Fuji Speedway and Suzuka, reducing drag while maintaining sufficient downforce for cornering, contrasting with higher-downforce setups for international tracks. The Nissan VRH35Z 3.5-litre twin-turbo V8 that debuted in the R89C was successful and kept as part of the R90C's design. It's able to produce over 800 hp and 780 Nm of torque in race trim but over 1000hp in qualifying. The R90 had a curb weight of just 900 kg. The car you see in this video is the first Nissan R89C chassis to be assembled, R89C-01, and it's now in the hands of Ascott Collection. It was fielded in competition during the 1989 season and at Le Mans in both 1989 and 1990. It made its last appearance at the Fuji 500 km in 1991, where it proudly wore the number 01 as Nissan had won the Japanese Championship the previous year. It then became part of the Nissan Heritage Collection for more than 31 years. Now after a complete restoration it's back in historic competition, managed by Scott Sport.
