Twitter @juangangel Coffee is the beverage obtained from the roasted and ground seeds of the coffee plant. It is a highly stimulating drink due to its caffeine content. It is usually drunk during breakfast, after breakfast, or even as the only breakfast, although it is also customary to drink it after lunch or dinner, to start conversations, or just out of habit. It is one of the most socializing non-alcoholic beverages in many countries. The most popular ways to drink it are black and with milk (with or without sugar); cream, condensed milk, hot chocolate, or some liqueur are also often added, depending on the recipe, as there are many ways to prepare it. It is usually served hot, but it is also drunk cold or over ice. In Spain, Portugal, Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina, roasted or torrefacto coffee is commonly consumed, that is, roasted with sugar. The coffee plant is native to the Kaffa province in the Abyssinian highlands of present-day Ethiopia, where it grows wild. 1 The energetic qualities of coffee were already known to the Galla tribe of Ethiopia in the 11th century, who mixed it with animal fat. 2 It was later introduced to Arabia, from where it spread to the rest of the world with the Turkish rule of Anatolia. Currently, the plant is cultivated mainly in tropical and subtropical countries. Brazil accounts for just over a third of world production. Coffee beans are one of the main agricultural products traded in international markets and often make a significant contribution to the exports of producing regions. Coffee cultivation is culturally linked to the history and progress of many countries that have produced it for more than a century. During the 2012/2013 period, 8.7 million tons of coffee were produced, of which approximately 80% was exported for a value of $19.1 billion, while the gross value of the total coffee trade industry is estimated at $173.4 billion. Currently, more than 25 million family farms in some 80 countries cultivate around 15 billion coffee trees, the production of which results in the 2.25 billion cups of coffee consumed daily.
