16 Red Tara Mantra: Tara Who Increases Wisdom and Overcomes Enemies, Evil Magic, Disaster

Red Blazing Tara is also known as “Red Tara Who Arises from the Hum of Intrinsic Awareness” and like all Red Tara’s her mantra magnetizes the powers we need to overcome obstacles — in this case, according to Lama Tsultrim of Tara Mandala her “power completely destroys enemies, evil spells, and Mara, lord of negative forces.” Why is she blazing? She is ablaze with the wisdom of pure Dharma. In the Atisha lineage, chanted here in Sanskrit, her mantra is: om tare tuttare ture sarva dharma prati parishodhaya svaha She can be both wrathful and peaceful, depending on what Is needed to control the negative forces. Her symbol is the VishvaVajra or Double Dharma Wheel or Double Dorje (Double Vajra) representing both the Dharma wheel and also the five Buddha Families (center and the four directions as spokes of the double Dorje). In Atisha lineage she is often visualized less elaborately with a red vase filed with red nectar, at least on paintings featuring all 21 Taras. On Apple Music here:   / red-tara-power-mantras   The first eight syllables ask for Tara’s protection from the eight dangers, illness and disease and other obstacles — like all Tara mantras containing Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha (according to great Longchenpa) then further supplicates a special request, in this case “purification of all negativities by the perfection of the blazing light of the Dharma”: “Om” is homage to (and invokes) the Body Speech and Mind of Tara. “Tare”, liberates and saves us from suffering in Samsara “Tuttare” liberates us from the 8 dangers of lions, elephants, fires, snakes, robbers, prisons, floods and demons, which also mirror the poisons of pride, delusion, hatred, jealousy, wrong views, greed, desire, attachment, doubt. Thus, Tuttare liberates us from every outer and inner danger. “Ture”, liberates us from disease. “Sarva Dharma” — all dharmas (the blazing illumination of Buddha’s teachings) “Prati parishodhaya” — of purity and perfection “Svaha” here translates as "be it so" or "well said." This supplicates Tara to magnetize all Dharma, or sarva dharma of prati, purity and perfection, or parishodhaya. In Sanskrit her verse of praise (see our chanting of the 21 Taras Praise in Sanskrit linked below) is: Sanskrit: Namah pramudi tabandha ripu gatra vabhedini dashakshara pada nyashe vidya Hum kara dipite Regardless of lineage, the verse in the 21 Taras praise translates as: Homage to you who turn the sharp Wheel of Dharma For those who love the teachings, And who crush all inner and outer enemies, With the ten syllable mantra and the seed syllable HUM.
