In the past, I've always had to teach on either the normal guitar or the ukulele, until I discovered a hybrid. The Guilele or Guitalele is the best of both worlds, and it's reasonably priced, right at $100. It is the size of a ukulele, which is great for small kids, but plays like a guitar, so they can transition to a larger guitar when they grow up and take all of their knowledge with them. My two oldest kids started learning on a Guilele at ages 6 and 8, and it has worked great for them.
