The Mediator-The Interpreter (Exodus 20:18-20) - Charles Spurgeon Sermon

A sermon delivered by C. H. Spurgeon, Lord's day morning, July 28th 1889. Many people believe that the Ten Commandments are a good set of rules to live by, and that the Bible is a useful book to make us more moral. However, Spurgeon’s text teaches us something very important about the Law: it frightened those who first heard it, and made them reach for Moses rather than the face of God. Spurgeon says here: “Certain servants of God, who had experienced this law-work to a very deep degree, fell into the error of regarding a marked measure of it as absolutely necessary to every child of God.” In his sermon “Things that Accompany Salvation” (1857; to be uploaded Monday Dv) he seemed to hold a different opinion: “More or less of terrors every man must feel before he is converted. Some have less, some have more; but there must be some measure of this terrible law work in the soul, or else Salvation is not come to a man’s house.” Spurgeon essentially teaches us here the fear of God; as much because of His mercy as His awesome holiness. As we fear Him, so we seek to find acceptance and peace through the ‘one Mediator’ Jesus Christ.
