This is the full Makati Avenue walking tour. 40 stops. One street. Almost a century of Philippine history layered on top of itself. Less than 100 years ago, this entire avenue did not exist. It was a runway, part of Nielson Field, the Philippines' first international airport, opened in 1937 by British aviation enthusiast Laurie Nielson on land donated by Enrique Zóbel de Ayala. When commercial flights moved out in 1948, the runways were paved into three streets: Ayala Avenue, Paseo de Roxas, and Makati Avenue- the three sides of today's Ayala Triangle. In the 1950s, Ayala Corporation turned the former airfield into the country's first planned Central Business District. On this walk we cover, among others, public art by National Artists, brutalist holdouts, the country's first LEED Platinum office, a Nauruan-funded skyscraper, an Iranian-Filipino kebab institution, a wine shop, and a stubborn 8-storey holdout that BDO couldn't buy.
