Astra Sports Tourer – Designer Piece or All-Rounder? "Opel, Opel CarAvan, ...!" The Rüsselsheim-based company has done it again. And they've been doing it for 60 years. The Hessian automaker is now launching the 11th generation of the compact station wagon as a Sports Tourer. At the beginning of the year, I introduced the new Opel Astra as a 5-door. Now it's time to check out the CarAvan (station wagon). Like its slightly shorter sibling, there's also the slightly longer station wagon version with a comprehensive range of powertrains. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, the classic gasoline engine, and even a diesel variant are available. A fully electric version is scheduled to be added in 2023. Because I'm a fan of PHEVs, I'd like to take a closer look at the plug-in hybrid version today. The plug-in's drive system consists of a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 150 hp and a 110 hp electric motor. This results in a system output of 180 hp / 133 kW. A purely electric range of up to 60 kilometers is possible. If that's not enough for you, you can look forward to a more powerful 225 hp engine later this year, which will also offer a longer range. As before, there are three trim levels for the Astra Sports Tourer: "Elegance" with plenty of chrome, the sporty "GS Line," and the ultimate "Ultimate" trim with its 18-inch wheels and Alcantara seat upholstery. The current PHEV version delivers a maximum torque of 360 Newton meters, enabling the sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. The Astra Sports Tourer has a clean and bold design. Naturally, the new compact station wagon also sports the latest brand design, which is sure to catch people's attention. The optional bi-color exterior looks great on the Sports Tourer and underscores the sporty, stretched-out look of this station wagon. The so-called "Opel Vizor" appears as a horizontal line extending to the rear, which is reflected in the wing-shaped LED graphics. Intelli-Lux LED headlights with 168 modular light elements are also available as an option. Disco Pumper Alert? No! The bright light simply provides more safety. The slightly flared wheel arches make the Astra Sports Tourer appear bold, clear, and yet muscular. However, it's more appropriate here than in a provincial club. By the way, the Astra doesn't stop partying until it reaches 225 kilometers per hour. With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the party continues with music from your smartphone. Two 10-inch widescreen displays with glass surfaces display the desired content. The Pure Panel gives the interior an exceptionally modern and progressive cockpit look. The new Sports Tourer is easy and relaxed to drive. In normal driving situations, it always remains docile and easy to control. Its chassis is perfectly tuned for the heavier load compared to the 5-door model. I enjoyed driving the Sports Tourer with its PHEV drivetrain. It's also nice that PHEVs don't have a manual transmission, which allows you to concentrate better on the road. Prices for the family-friendly Astra start at €27,750 for the base model.
