Walk around the island village Seto Inland Sea Kashima Kurahashijima (Hiroshima Prefecture) / Granite quarrying and masonry island village Kashima Located at the southern tip of Kurahashijima Island, off the coast of Kaoru-to, which flourished as a port for waiting for favorable winds and tides during the Edo period, Kashima faces Yamaguchi and Ehime prefectures and is the southernmost inhabited island in Hiroshima Prefecture. Residents first settled here around the Bunkyu era (1861-1864) at the end of the Edo period. Until then, it served as a meadow and a place for craftsmen in the Muroo, Motoura, and Otate districts of Kurahashijima. The Geihan Tsushi (1825) notes that the island was once called Keikajima or Kamijima, and farmers from Kurahashijima would travel there and make tsukudzu. With the Meiji era beginning, the population rapidly increased due to the rise of sardine net fishing and octopus trap fishing. In 1975, the Kashima Bridge was built, connecting the island to Kure City on the mainland via Kurahashi Island. While the area is hilly and lacks flat land, it is blessed with beautiful nature. Kurahashi Island The largest island in Hiroshima Prefecture, Kurahashi Island is located at the junction of Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, and Ehime prefectures, making it the southernmost point of Hiroshima Prefecture. The southern part of the island was Kurahashi Town before the merger, while the northern part was Ondo Town, connecting it to Kure City on the mainland via the Ondo Bridge. Blessed with a warm Seto Inland Sea-style climate, the island's terrain is mountainous and hilly, with numerous bays along the coastline. Many settlements are scattered along the flat coastline. In ancient times, there were no roads connecting the settlements, and people traveled by boat. The sunset over Nomi Island to the west, as seen from Tahara in Ondo Town around Tono, is a beautiful sight. The Omukae and Umigoe districts of Kurahashi Town also offer beautiful views of the sun setting over the Seto Inland Sea islands. The Kurahashi district in the southern part of the island has been known as Nagato Island since ancient times, and is said to have been a strategic point in the inland sea. The 15th volume of the Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves) contains five poems by an envoy to Silla, "Composed while anchoring his boat on the shores of Nagato Island in Aki Province." One of the poems reads, "My life has been abandoned by the gods for generations, at Komatsubara on Nagato Island." The island has also had many shipbuilders since ancient times, and it's said that the ships used by the envoys to Tang China were built here. The boats used in the musical ceremonies at Itsukushima Shrine were also donated from the island. During the Edo period, the island flourished as one of the leading shipbuilding centers in the Seto Inland Sea, and Karouto Ferry at the southern tip was a bustling port where offshore shipping could wait out the winds. From the Meiji period onward, the stone industry flourished, and the island's cherry granite was chosen for the construction of the National Diet Building, and the island is known nationwide as an island of stone.
