Superman Analogue: Superboy (Kon-El / Conner Kent)

Original Text: In order to properly clone a #SupermanAnalogue, you'll have to make some changes from the base, as was the case with the Post-Crisis Superboy! #Superboy showed up initially during the Reign of the Supermen arc, following the Death of Superman at Doomsday's hands. He was presented as a clone of Superman that escaped before he had reached maturation. This was supported by a long arc dealing with the genetics lab, Cadmus, attempting to study Superman's body and seemingly finally cracking the code. This was a red herring. It turned out that the kid was actually a human base that was modified to emulate and imitate Superman. At first the base was a mystery, but once he got his own series, he was revealed to be a clone of Paul Westfield, a lesser villain. His powers were based on Superman's aura, as established in Byrne's Man of Steel run, modified to be a tactile telekinesis field. This allowed him to fly, emulate super strength, and be invulnerable to solid objects. It also let him do all kinds of tricks, manipulating anything he can touch. As a result, even though he wasn't as durable and lacked the raw power of Superman, he could do all kinds of things that the real thing couldn't. He didn't have the vision powers, so he wore a pair of glasses that gave him x-ray and heat vision, though he lost those not long after first acquiring them. The costume he was introduced in was quickly dated, so he switched to an updated version for the back half of the run of his solo series. While I have a soft spot for the original, I really dug the update as well. During this era, he finally got a name besides "Superboy", as Superman adopted him into the House of El, naming him Kon-El (which is a scrambling of "clone"). Once Geoff Johns relaunched Teen Titans, Superboy was brought on. He dressed in a casual design and had his origins retconned to be a test tube baby of Superman and Lex Luthor. They slowly added more traditional Kryptonian powers as a result. (I'm not a big fan of this retcon though I really liked later versions of the character who shared the origin. Mainly, I hated how it was handled, basically invalidating much of his solo series. Lex Luthor obviously is a more interesting choice than the long forgotten Westfield) Anywho, Superboy, now calling himself Conner Kent, faced off against the insane Superboy of Earth Prime (long story, I'll get to him. Not the Pocket Universe version) and was killed. I don't think we saw him again until the New 52. He was relaunched with a Tron-tastic outfit and I don't really know much about after, though apparently he was now a clone of Jonathan Kent, Superman's son? Or was it Chris Kent, who was Zod's son? I was checked out at this time. This Superboy was a major part of the Young Justice cartoon (here head excellently used as a hybrid of Luthor and Superman). His powers were more like the Golden Age Superman, not having any trace of tactile telekinesis. There was a nod in Smallville, too. Given that the promise of the character is seeing him grow up to be Superman, we've seen him aged up a few times...sorry forgot to mention that at various points his aging has been locked in as a teenager, but not always. During the Sins of Youth arc, he was magically transformed into an adult, with his tactiel telekinesis being vastly more powerful In Titans Tommorow, we saw a villainous future version that'll has become subservient to Lex Luthor. This one adorably had a receding hairline to reflex the Luthor DNA. I always liked the character. His powers were unique from Superman, perfect for an X-Men fan like I was at the time (I noted a similarity to Hellion). His look worked for me, but I was the target audience for all 90s excess. Later versions have all worked for me too. (So, I'm not going to talk about the classic "Superman as a Boy" Superboy, because he's just Superman in his youth. The fantasy is the same. This Superboy however is about living up to Superman, so I think we have a different and interesting story) So, one thing to emphasize is that the 90s Superboy brought me over to DC after getting into comics as a Marvel guy. It's really important in my interest in that aspects of comics.
