The Lighting Plan - Episode 5 - Oren Soffer
Welcome to the fifth episode of The Lighting Plan, a series that follows the extraordinary talent and skill of photographers and cinematographers. In today's episode, we meet Oren Soffer — co-cinematographer of Gareth Edwards' The Creator alongside Greig Fraser ASC ACS, one of Variety's 10 Cinematographers to Watch, and a DP who describes his approach as "curated naturalism". Join him in the studio as he builds a low-light morning scene from the ground up — a heavy, gloomy "morning after" moment designed to carry a character's isolation and sadness. Watch as he builds layers of light to activate spaces, build depth and tell the story with the light. Along the way he breaks down the thinking underneath it all: why he starts with what's already there and adds as little as possible, how a character's mood drives every color and exposure choice, and why lighting big at low power keeps you ready for anything — even a surprise jump to high speed. The scene was captured on the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 — Fujifilm's large-format cinema camera — on the GF 55mm wide open at T1.7, open gate, using shallow depth of field to isolate the character from her world. It's a masterclass in manufacturing daylight indoors — and making it look found. The Lighting Plan is a masterclass-style educational series designed for cinematographers, photographers, and visual storytellers seeking practical, real world insight into professional lighting techniques. The Lighting Plan series was made possible by our sponsor GVM. https://gvmled.com/ With contributing sponsor FUJIFILM, who provided the GFX ETERNA 55 camera and lenses for this episode. https://shopusa.fujifilm-x.com/ Learn more about Oren Soffer: https://www.orensoffer.com/ / orensofferdp
