Is Billy Goat Bluff Victoria's STEEPEST 4x4 Track?
Some tracks test your vehicle. Others test your nerve — and Billy Goat Bluff Track does both. With roughly 1,200 m of elevation change over just 7 km, and sections hitting gradients near 25%–27% (about 1 in 4), this is one of the steepest and most demanding tracks in the Victorian High Country — making every metre of descent as rewarding as it is relentless. In this adventure, we head into the heart of the High Country via Dargo in the MV Triton, putting it to the test with some more serious off-road action as we travel south before beginning our climb on the Trails Track. From there, we tackle the challenging and often rough Junction Spur Track, which was extremely rutted and rocky and easily one of the most challenging sections of this trek — but also great fun — followed by Castle Hill Track as we work our way higher into the mountains towards the Pinnacle Lookout. The effort is well worth it, with sweeping High Country views opening up as we arrive at the stunning Pinnacle Lookout — one of the true highlights of this region. After taking time to soak it all in and enjoying a well-earned lunch, we make the short drive to the start of one of Victoria’s most iconic 4WD descents. Then it’s time to point the bonnet downhill and commit to the legendary Billy Goat Bluff Track — a steep, technical descent that demands focus, control, and respect for the terrain. With low range engaged and careful line selection, the MV Triton handled the descent with confidence and ease, soaking up the rough sections and maintaining steady control all the way down. With loose rocks, sharp drop-offs, and breathtaking scenery in every direction, this is an experience every serious High Country tourer should tackle at least once. If you’re planning a trip into the Victorian High Country, this route delivers challenging driving, unforgettable views, and one of the most famous descents in Australia’s 4WD scene.
