How To Make a Raccoon Fur Bag

As an update to this video for anyone concerned, we want to let you all know that as of 2023 we strictly only pick up unwanted deer hides from local processors to tan (normally considered waste and discarded). We do not trap, but this video is saved and shared for anyone who wants to be responsible with a harvest and maybe reduce waste on their own. This video shows how we turned a finished, tanned raccoon hide/fur into a small carrying bag to take with us in the woods. It has an accompanying Mother Earth News article seen here: https://www.motherearthnews.com/diy/h... . We are repurposing a responsibly harvest raccoon fur from 2020 into a nifty little bag, complete with braided deer leather lace from tanned hides from a few years ago (sourced from hunter throwaways). While I know it is not the best quality bag, it is giving new purpose to a pelt, and there are many ways you can make this your own. To Address Any Potential Questions/Concerns: No, we do not run a full trap line, this was the single raccoon from that year. Normally, we only tan deer hides that someone else has taken (not an animal we harvested), and we just take what is considered a trash/waste product and give it purpose. Yes, we understand the balance of nature and that there will be mixed responses. Everyone has the right to their opinion 100% The purpose of the article and video were to encourage people to learn about tanning and what to do with the hides, in a RESPONSIBLE manner. One of the biggest things I like to do is encourage people to tan, because it reduces waste. There are many people out there who will hunt, raise animals for food, protect livestock and poultry by trapping. What I hope to see is people who do these things will be more responsible with their harvest and repurpose the parts that would ordinarily be wasted. This is why we like to get deer hides (not something we ourselves took) from other hunters who normally throw them out and tan them, to bring new purpose to that and to be respectful to the animals. Again, everyone has the right to their opinion on this and I respect that, and just wanted to briefly state where I come from on it myself. Fur was tanned with this bottle formula, our first time using it: https://amzn.to/3ouOqxT We used this lace maker to get our deer leather laces to braid for the strap: https://amzn.to/3oEqJmQ Camera used for filming: https://amzn.to/334QUJm We enjoy tanning and turning hides into crafts just like this, responsibly sourcing our hides and using all we can of the animal respectfully.
