Above the stork enclosure at Cheongju Zoo, wild storks built a nest, and four lives were born. Last year, the storks that visited Cheongju Zoo left without being able to build a nest. But this year, they have returned. A place they remembered and chose again. The storks built a nest, laid eggs, and guarded it to the very end. Even when it rained or the wind blew, the storks did not leave the nest. They rolled the eggs, incubated them with their bodies, brought food for their chicks, raising life. A pair of storks raise their young together. One guards the nest, while the other leaves to find food. And then they return to continue the lineage. The stork, which once completely disappeared from Korea. Due to poaching and pesticides, it vanished from our skies in the 1970s. But now, they are returning. The change that began on this small nest is not merely reproduction. We are in the process of reclaiming the lives we lost. These four storks, born at Cheongju Zoo, will fly through the sky and build nests somewhere again. And someday, they may continue the lineage of another life.
