Holy Week in Seville has experienced its famous 'Madrugá' (early morning procession), with the parades of six brotherhoods and 15,000 penitents who processed for more than 12 hours. Without setbacks or incidents, the floats of the Esperanza Macarena and the Esperanza de Triana were returned to their places at midday on Good Friday, after 14 hours of penitential procession. Good Friday is the heart of Holy Week in towns with deeply rooted traditions such as Calanda (Teruel), where thousands of drums once again broke the silence; in Ferrol (A Coruña); and in Murcia, which wholeheartedly embraced the centuries-old Salzillo procession. In Calanda, absolute silence is the prelude to a thunderous drumbeat that shatters the hour and stirs the heart. As every Good Friday since the 17th century, the collective drumbeat resonates throughout this region of Lower Aragon for 24 consecutive hours. This year, actor Antonio Resines participated. In Murcia, the splendor of Baroque religious imagery took to the streets with its eight floats, examples of the sculptural virtuosity of Francisco Salzillo, from the 18th century. Queen Sofía attended this procession with her daughters. In Valladolid, the seven last words of Jesus before his death were commemorated with the solemnity of traditional Castilian liturgy. And in Castro Urdiales (Cantabria), the Living Passion Play is celebrated, a tradition dating back to 1985. The most intense night of Holy Week ends in a dawn full of contrasts, such as those experienced in the Turbas procession in Cuenca, documented since 1616.
